Melbourne is one of the most liveable cities in the world, and some guides say, fantastic to explore on a bike. I live in the city, and I think it’s a biker’s nightmare. Only Swanston Street has a dedicated bike path (if it’s not littered with idling tourist buses), and obviously crowded anytime of the day. The Yarra riverbank seemed to be the nearest, most scenic route you can take. It was a beautiful morning so I decided to rent a bike.
The shop owner handed me a bike map, and off I went. It’s been a while since the last time I rode a bike, so I had to get used to riding again first. When I finally got the hang of it, I took off towards the shared footpath and bikepath towards…..South Yarra suburb, I guess. I stopped when I saw a busy street. I turned back….crossed Princes Bridge, rode back towards Southbank through the Alfred Park. The Saturday brunch crowd on Southbank Promenade made me nervous, and when I saw kids on training wheels and memories of the East Coast Park biking accident that I had 2 years ago came flooding back. My two hours was up.
I wish the bike rental places open earlier, like 7 or 8 AM, when the city’s not so busy. The idea of buying a bike crossed my mind, but I have to see first if I’ll be doing this often, as renting a bike is expensive here.
